What is an ATS, and why does your resume score matter?

An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is the software most mid-size and large companies use to collect, parse, and rank resumes before a recruiter reads them. It doesn't automatically reject you, most applications are still reviewed by a person, but a resume that doesn't match the job's keywords, isn't structured in a way the software can parse, or lists duties instead of measurable results ranks lower and is far less likely to be seen.

What does "ATS-friendly" actually mean?

ATS-friendly is a shorthand for a resume that an Applicant Tracking System can correctly parse, index, and score. In practice it means three things:

• Parseable structure. Standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills, Summary), no tables or multi-column layouts in the body, and no text embedded in images or headers the software can't read.
• Keyword alignment. The resume uses the same terms the job description uses. If the posting says "project management" and your resume only says "PM," the ATS may not make the match.
• Clean file format. PDF and DOCX are universally supported. Avoid .pages, .jpg, or heavily designed PDFs where text is flattened into images.
