How to improve your resume match score
A resume job match score tells you two things: which keywords from the job description appear in your resume, and how many are missing. A high match score doesn't guarantee an interview, but a low match score almost certainly prevents one, because ATS systems filter resumes against the job description before a recruiter ever sees them.
What counts as a keyword
ATS-relevant keywords include specific tools and technologies, role-specific terms, required skills, and industry jargon. "Leadership" rarely matters; "Salesforce," "Kubernetes," "P&L management," or "GAAP" usually do. The job description is your clearest signal of what the ATS is scanning for.
When a low match score is expected
Not every low match score means you shouldn't apply. A career changer will score lower than a direct-match candidate by design. In those cases, your cover letter, network connection, or portfolio carries more weight than keyword matching. The score tells you where you are, not whether you qualify.
The right way to close keyword gaps
Add keywords that genuinely apply to your experience, in the context of actual accomplishments. "Python" is more credible in "Built a Python data pipeline processing 500K daily records" than as a standalone skill. Only add keywords you can speak to in an interview.
