Best resume template for a college student
We recommend the Jake's Resume template for technical majors and the Harvard template for business, humanities, and pre-med students. Both are clean, ATS-friendly single-column layouts that put education and projects at the top where they belong for students.
Common college student resume mistakes
- Listing coursework generically: "Data Structures, Algorithms, Databases" adds nothing. Only list courses if they directly match the job.
- Describing group projects as duties: Say what you specifically owned and what the outcome was.
- Including high school: Once you're in college, remove high school unless you're a freshman with a notable award.
- Padding with soft skills: "Team player," "hard worker," and "detail-oriented" are meaningless. Show these through your bullets.
- Not tailoring for the internship type: A finance internship and a software internship deserve two different resumes emphasizing different projects.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a resume as a college student?
Yes. You need one for internships, campus jobs, part-time roles, research assistantships, scholarships, and study-abroad applications. Build it early so you're never scrambling.
What if I don't have any work experience?
You have more than you think. Coursework projects, group assignments, campus leadership, volunteer work, tutoring, research, and side projects all count. Frame them the same way you'd frame a job.
Should I include my GPA?
Include your GPA if it's 3.5 or higher. Below that, drop it and lead with coursework, projects, and activities instead. GPA matters less once you have real work experience.
How long should a college student resume be?
One page. Recruiters expect a single page for students and early-career candidates. Cut anything not directly relevant.
